Sethe / 2015 / Hand-carved erasers, wooden folding hangers, stamp ink / 52 x 2.4 x 2 inches
The work has a reference to ‘Beloved’, a novel by Toni Morrison, exploring the notion of “rememory”. On a bar of handle made out of deconstructed wooden folding hangers, 46 erasers carved in low relief are attached. The text on the erasers is smeared with stamp ink. The title, Sethe, refers to name of the main protagonist.
The mirror-image text carved on the eraser is an expert from the book: “She had to do something with her hands because she was remembering something she had forgotten she knew. Something privately shameful that had seeped into a slit in her minds.”
