Joo Young Lee (b.1990, Seoul) is a multimedia artist based in Chicago and Seoul. Lee’s practice investigates the complex dynamics of safety and fear, simulation and survival, and fiction and documentary in contemporary urban environments, through the lens of visual-research, feminist theory, and media-technologies. Using 3D animation, sculpture, and multi-channel video installation, Her works activate both physical and psychological spaces. Lee received an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; a BFA in Sculpture from Pratt Institute, New York; and participated in BA at Central Saint Martins, London. Lee is the 2018 School of the Art Institute of Chicago Awardee of the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship. She is the recipient of the 2017 - 2018 Arts, Science + Culture Initiative Collaboration Grant from the University of Chicago where she worked with microbiologists, Maggie Zhang and Mirae Lee, on a collaborative project, Invisible/Invincible: The Bacteria Survival Guide. Lee is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the 2018-2019 New Media Program Residency at the Mana Contemporary Chicago. Her works have been shown in art spaces such as Steuben Gallery(NY), Galapagos Art Space(NY), Sullivan Galleries(IL), and Seoul Art Space Seogyo(Seoul). Lee has participated in new media screenings including Fake/Realities at Daedalus Project Multimedia Art Festival(Mykonos), BlaBlaBlind at The Book Society(Seoul), and Post/Natural: 98% Air at the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection(IL).
